Settlement Sooniyaw Corporation is the economic development arm of the Metis Settlements in Alberta — established to build lasting prosperity for our communities through principled, strategic investment.
Our History
Rooted in the Settlements
The Metis Settlements in Alberta hold a unique place in Canadian history — the only legislated Metis land base in Canada. For generations, Settlement members have worked to protect that land base and build the institutions needed to govern and develop it on their own terms.
Settlement Sooniyaw Corporation was created in the 1970's to be the economic engine of that vision. "Sooniyaw" — the Cree word for money or revenue — reflects our purpose: to turn the collective assets and opportunities of the Settlements into sustainable economic returns for our people.
We were built on the belief that economic sovereignty and cultural sovereignty go hand in hand. A strong economic foundation gives Settlement members the freedom to live, work, and thrive on their own land — on their own terms.
